FOOD: Pamper Your Taste Buds With a Dash from Damascus

The Syrian cuisine is varied and rich, in view of the fertility of Syrian lands and the abundance of their crops which enable the cook to be a master and to diversify in his choice and talent in the preparation of fresh meals made of vegetables, legumes and meats.
The Syrian table is always decorated with the various delicious pastries famous all over the world. Travelers do not miss to take with them on their leaving the country samples of these sweets to give them as presents to their dear friends and family members. These desserts are followed by fresh or dried fruits grown in Syrian fields.
Health concern is also cared for through the Syrian fresh and pure mineral waters gushing from mountains tops.

To mention the gastronomic Syrian plates, we have a great deal of choices:
- Meat balls with sour cherries.
- Stew of quinces, with or without kebbe.
- Dishes with hot yogurt.
- Kebbes assorted with spinach, hot yogurt, grenades or cabbage.
- Tender meat assorted with different sauces.
- Vegetables, which are only found in Aleppo, such as the ajjour, the caper and the akkoum.
- Sweets of Aleppo or of Damascus, such as the karabij, the baklava with cherries.

EL PRINCIPE

MOVIE REVIEW: Red

Genre: Action | Comedy | Comic book adaptation
MPAA: Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of action violence and brief strong language
Length: 111 minutes
Director: Robert Schwentke
Stars: Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren and Morgan Freeman

Following on from the successes of 2010’s blazing action movies such as ‘Kick-***’ and ‘The Expendables’, we have a new motion picture joining them, and dare I say, just as good.

The movie follows a simple plot with a ‘surprise’ twist towards the end. The story involves ex-super CIA agent Frank Moses (played by the awesome Bruce Willis). One calm day of his retired life as a senior citizen, a squad of ski-mask-wearing, high-tech-weapon-wielding unknown men storm his house in a failed attempt to kill him. Without giving away much of the plot, the rest of the movie follows him trying to uncover the identity of his assassins, using some OLD help.

The movie relies on low level special effects but still looks absolutely superb, especially in the action scenes. The director does a wonderful job of giving the right mix of high speed shutter cameras at the right times, and the sound effects are near perfect. The gem of the movie, however, is the fact that it is virtually free of any cheesy scenes. Acting wise, the movie is very, very good with special thanks to some great casting. The one disappointment that this movie brings is the plot. The idea has been repeated some million times, and even though it could’ve been modified to still stun people, it was just predictable.

SPORTS: It's all about The Game...

Sports. Sports. Sports.

It’s more than just a game isn’t it?

The way a thousand-million fans scream their hearts out, the way husbands ignore the screams of their ranting wives and the way players scream, either in defeat or victory. What makes them go gaga over this thing called ‘sports’?

One thing: Passion.

People enjoy sports because we all love a good story of passion. And that is what makes sports so massive. It’s brimming with emotion, it’s bursting with zealousness and it’s full of heart. And this is the groundwork of dreams. This is what turns a team into a dynasty, a player into a champion and a spectator to an avid fanatic. This is sports. And it’s our religion.

The best thing about sports is it’s not only for the professionals, athletes or super-jocks. It’s for everyone, anyone who shares a genuine love for a ball. That’s why we have football in our TVs, basketball in our game consoles, jerseys and kits in our wardrobes. It’s anyone’s ball game.

This sports column will be dedicated to the team, the player and the sports enthusiast. So make sure you tune in. After all, it’s not whether you win or lose. It’s all about how you play the game.

MUSIC: Of Cereals and Lyrics...

All songs have a purpose to it. They can be direct and mindless; in which there is still meaning in the lack of meaning and reason behind the unreason (can anybody resist dancing to a Ke$ha song really?) and they can be ambiguous; in which streams of different interpretations are free to flow - these are the songs I find most beautiful.

Some people tend to stereotype kinds of songs as either ‘mainstream’ or ‘indie’ or other genres in which I find a lack of adequate understanding of the purpose of music- a unifying language.

The loveliest music around are the one that speaks and relates to most people. No matter how it is perceived, it must comfort the soul.

Sometimes it gives an answer to a mutual problem..

or a rhetoric question that broadens the minds thinking.

or just plain and simple - make you move, wiggle and forget!

The purposes could be endless.

To end this, I give you the song that speaks to me the most these days.

The song can be easily perceived more as a plea about an unrequited love (which is pretty relatable too) but to me there is more to it between the lines.

The injustice of the lack of opportunities and credit that we try hard to work for most of the time. But again that is just me. Oh great melancholy!

So how about you? Does a particular song speak to you greatly these days? Speak and share to me!
